David S. Lopez, President and CEO, has named George V. Masi permanent HCHD Chief Operating Officer (COO). The official announcement was made on June 8, nearly two months after Masi was named Interim COO.

Masi has 30 years of healthcare administration experience. He took over the interim post on April 19, a day after the Board of Managers selected Lopez as the Hospital District’s permanent CEO.

A search committee appointed by Lopez selected Masi from a pool of 175 applicants. Committee members called him the “best qualified candidate” for the position.

“After carefully evaluating the (committee’s) recommendation, I made the decision that Mr. Masi is indeed competent and capable to fill this position,” Lopez said. “I’m pleased to inform you that effective immediately he is our permanent Chief Operating Officer.”

Masi was previously Associate Administrator at Ben Taub Hospital and has been with HCHD since 2001.

“I’m delighted and honored to be named by Mr. Lopez as the Chief Operating Officer,” he said. “I will do my best to fulfill the mission of the Hospital District, and to always keep in the forefront that it’s all about valuing our staff and taking care of our patients.”

Masi’s healthcare administration experience includes 26 years as a commissioned officer with the U.S. Army Medical Department. Among his assignments, he served as COO for an eight-hospital system in the Army and was Commander of Fort Stewart’s Winn Army Hospital, home of the 3rd Infantry Division, before coming to HCHD.
