Harris County Hospital District CEO Listed Among Nation’s Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare
(HOUSTON) April 8, 2008 – Harris County Hospital District (HCHD) President and CEO David S. Lopez has been named one of the nation’s Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine. This is the second time Lopez has been named to the publication’s list, which features individuals who exemplify outstanding leadership and the ability and desire to help change the healthcare industry.
Lopez has served as the HCHD’s chief executive since April 2005. Prior to his being tapped to lead the health system, he served as the organization’s interim president and CEO from March 2004 until his permanent appointment, and was its executive vice president and chief operating officer from 2000-2004.
Under Lopez's
leadership, HCHD has achieved a financial health not found in many other
public hospitals. In fact, the district is able to fund an ambitious
$200 million capital construction program from its operational revenues
with no tax increase. The new facilities created through its capital
construction program will enable the district to provide more timely
access to patients and provide its staff with the physical platform to
efficiently serve more patients.
"David has done all that the Board could expect, creating a more efficient organization, and a financially healthy one," said Stephen DonCarlos, chairman of HCHD's Board of Managers. "Because of this, the district can pursue its plans to serve more of the county's uninsured and underinsured, which is our mission and ultimate bottom line."
Lopez earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. He possesses more than 30 years of experience in healthcare administration.
