Alcohol Septal Ablation
for Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardimyopathy
How is HOCM diagnosed?
By listening through a stethoscope, a physician may hear a heart murmur
which may be suggestive of this condition. The electrocardiogram (EKG, or
ECG) may show some changes in the electrical activity of the heart.
Echocardiography is the most common and best way for diagnosing HOCM. It
uses sound waves to detect the extent of muscle wall thickening, the
increased pressure in the ventricle, and to assess the status of the
overall heart function. Other tests that also provide helpful information
are MRI and cardiac catheterization.
