What is HOCM?

Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) is a genetic disease of the heart characterized by excessive overgrowth or thickening of the septum, the muscle that separates the right and left chambers of the heart. The bulging muscle obstructs the normal blood flow from the left ventricle to the rest of the body. This causes an increase in the pressure of the left ventricle and puts strain on the pumping chamber. It also causes the mitral valve of the heart to move abnormally which further blocks the blood flow out of the left ventricle.
