Alcohol Septal Ablation
for Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardimyopathy
Treatment Options
Medications: Beta-blockers, calcium-channel blocker, and other
drugs such as disopyrimide. Most of these medication are given to slow the
heart rate and increase the filling of the heart, which helps to reduce
the outflow obstruction and relax the heart. In many patients, symptoms
are well-controlled with medication. However, some patients are refractory
to medical therapy.
Pacemaker: It is thought that the pacemaker may change the pattern
of the contraction of the heart and reduce the degree of obstruction.
There is a controversy on whether pacing is an effective treatment for
this condition.
Myectomy: This is an open- heart surgery where the surgeon cuts out
the overgrown muscle of the septum. Surgery is effective in reducing
symptoms and obstruction of blood flow out of the heart in about 70%-90%
of patients, with an operative mortality of less than 5%.
