Ben Taub’s Department of Anesthesiology, though not commonly known to the
public, is a vital area of medicine used daily in the care of our
patients. Our patients undergoing surgery or those coming in as emergency
cases through Ben Taub’s Level I Trauma Center are usually the first to
encounter these professionals. We provide patients with latest in pain
relief and pain-numbing medication. Their expertise is essential in the
recovery and comfort of patients in our intensive care units (ICUs).

Family and Community Medicine
Ben Taub’s Department of Family and Community Medicine provides patients
with sound medical care through a mix of preventive health measures and
health education. Our preventive care begins in earnest with health
screenings, immunizations, prenatal and postnatal care and nutrition
counseling. Physicians and nurses emphasize the importance of disease
management to those suffering from heart disease and diabetes.
Dermatology
Ben Taub’s Department of Dermatology provides extensive care to patients
suffering from skin disorders through a series of clinics on both an
inpatient and outpatient basis. Our physicians and nurses treat an
assortment of major skin disorders including psoriasis and atopic
dermatitis.
Medicine
Ben Taub’s Department of Medicine provides patients a comprehensive
program of care with subspecialties for major areas such as endocrinology,
cardiology, oncology, pulmonary, renal and gastroenterology. Last year,
our physicians and nurses admitted 7,200 patients for ailments including
diabetes, heart disease, ulcers, asthma and kidney disease. In addition,
we took care of 34,000 outpatient visits to our 14 medicine clinics, which
included 13,340 patient visits for general medicine concerns. Patients
visited Ben Taub’s medicine clinics after being referred there from any of
the Hospital District’s network of health centers or as emergency patients
through the hospital’s Level I Trauma Center.

Endocrinology – The treatment of
hormones and their associated diseases such as diabetes.
Renal – Ben Taub’s renal subspecialty treats
kidneys.
Cardiology – Ben Taub cardiology
subspecialty performed 1,024 cardiac catheterizations and 255 angioplasty
procedures.
Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy
Oncology – The treatment of cancer.
Pulmonary – The treatment of diseases
related to the lungs.
Gastroenterology – The treatment of
diseases related to the stomach and digestive system.

Neurology
Ben Taub’s Department of Neurology provides care to patients suffering
from neurological disorders through an outpatient neurology clinic,
inpatient neurology service, consultation service and the hospital’s Level
I Trauma Center. Our surgeons and nurses treated 544 patients for ailments
as diverse as stroke, epilepsy, dementia and neuromuscular disease.
Neurosurgery
Ben Taub’s Neurosurgery service treats patients suffering from diseases of
the brain, spinal cord, the nervous system, including the extra cranial
carotid and vertebral arteries and disorders of the pituitary gland. Our
surgeons and nurses saw a 14-percent increase in patient volume from the
previous year. We provide patients with diagnostic and management care for
ailments as diverse as stroke, neuromuscular disease, epilepsy, headache
and dementia.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Ben Taub’s Department of OB/GYN provides women a full complement of
services, including well-women health exams, screening for cervical cancer
and routine pelvic and infectious disease exams. Last year, 1,030 women
were admitted for gynecological care. In addition, nearly 10,000 patient
visits were made to our hospital’s gynecological clinics. Our physicians
and nurses delivered 5,324 babies to Houston mothers. Our newly remodeled
labor-delivery-recovery suites offer expectant mothers and their families
a complete and inviting environment to enjoy the birth of their child. We
offer specialized care to mothers suffering from high-risk conditions such
as diabetes, hypertension, previous pregnancy loss or other maternal
illnesses, treatment of incontinence and menstrual irregularity.

Ophthalmology
Ben Taub’s Department of Ophthalmology provides patients with a
comprehensive medical and surgical eye care program, as well as, a
clinical research program examining the structure and function of the eye.
Our physicians and nurses provide treatment for blinding diseases,
including cataracts, glaucoma, uveal melanoma, corneal infections, tumors,
hereditary eye diseases and optic nerve diseases.
Pathology
Ben Taub’s Department of Pathology uses the latest technology and advances
in research in the treatment of disease. Pathology has been defined as
“that branch of medicine which treats the essential nature of disease.”
Our pathologists are experts at interpreting the microscopic views of body
tissue.
Pediatrics
(Ben Taub Children's Center)
Ben Taub’s Department of Pediatrics, including neonatology, treats
children from newborns to late teens for a variety of ailments. Our care
includes normal and newborn care, intermediate and level III neonatal
intensive care and all pediatric subspecialties including adolescent,
allergy, cardiology, neurology, pulmonary and renal. Young
patients receive educational benefits from Child Life, the normalization
program to help children adjust to hospitalization. Our trained experts
help children cope with minor to major medical procedures. Our team of
physicians and nurses expertly handle their care through regular pediatric
units, pediatric intensive care unit (Pedi ICU) and the premier neonatolgy
intensive care unit (Neo ICU), which at times boasts a 70-percent
occupancy rate.

Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation
Ben Taub’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation provides
adults and children with acute and chronic physical therapy and
occupational therapy. Our patients receive a complement of care from
includes physicians, physical and occupational therapists, and speech
therapists. Our experts work with patients on short and long-term
rehabilitation programs to strengthen muscles, re-teach walking and
mobility and help patients readjust to home and work environments.
Psychiatry
Ben Taub’s Department of Psychiatry provides patients emergency inpatient
and outpatient care. Patients receive emergency care only through the
hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center. Our patients are admitted on an
emergency basis are eventually released or transported to other
psychiatric facilities. Their care is expertly handled according to state
and federal guidelines.
Radiology
Ben Taub’s Department of Radiology provides patients with radiation
therapy, diagnostic radiology studies and procedures and the use of
nuclear medicine studies. Last year, our radiologists performed 1,443
arteriograms, venograms and angiograms, as well as, performed 403 venous
catheter placement procedures.

Surgery
Ben Taub’s Department of Surgery is organized into general, thoracic and
pediatric. General surgery is further divided into three primary services.
In addition, our teams of physicians and nurses offer subspecialty care in
areas of emergency, trauma, surgical critical care, thoracic, endocrine,
vascular, abdominal surgery, colon and rectal surgery and ambulatory
surgery.
Emergency Center
Ben Taub’s Level I Trauma Center sees about 102,000 patient visits a year.
Of this number, nearly one-third or about 30,000 patients, arrive in the
trauma center for a variety of surgery-related ailments including
crime-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, falls, internal bleeding,
head injuries and severe cuts.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Ben Taub’s ICUs are renowned for their life-saving staff and equipment.
Last year, physicians and nurses saw 32,259 patients through our medicine
and surgical ICUs including Medicine ICU, Critical Care Unit, Pedi ICU,
Surgical ICU, Neurosurgical ICU and Critical Wound Unit. These specialized
units are designed to provide optimal care to patients including
intravenous feeding, hemo-dynamic monitoring, ventilitory support, pain
medication and antibiotic and antacid therapy.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Ben Taub’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service provides treatment to
patients suffering from ailments to the mouth and jaw. Our surgeons and
nurses treat patients suffering from major facial trauma or who need
reconstructive surgery following trauma or cancer surgeries.

Plastic Surgery
Ben Taub’s Plastic Surgery service treats patients devastated by the
effects of disease or trauma. Our surgeons treat patients on both an
inpatient and outpatient basis. Reconstructive procedures are routinely
performed for women who have undergone partial or full removal of a
breast. Only necessary procedures are performed. There are no elective
procedures.
Orthopedic Surgery
Ben Taub’s Orthopedic Surgery service provides patients with a
comprehensive program on the treatment of bone and joint infections;
metabolic bone disease; reconstructive and arthroscopic surgery of the
foot, hip, knee, and shoulder; joint replacement surgery; trauma and
fractures; tumors; and arthritis and rheumatology. Last year, our surgeons
and nurses saw a 9-percent increase in patients receiving orthopedic care.
Otolaryngology - Head
and Neck Surgery
Ben Taub’s Otolaryngology service provides complete treatment for
ailments of the ear, larynx, head and neck, respiratory tract, upper
alimentary system and related structures, trachea, and endocrine glands.
Our physicians and nurses are experts in hearing disorders due to
otosclerosis, congenital deafness, chronic middle ear disease, Meniere's
disease, sinus disease, and Presbycusis, Thyroid disease, Tumors, voice
and language disorders, swallowing disorders, snoring disorders, reflux
and sleep disorders.
Urology
Ben Taub’s Urology service offers patients a complement of treatment and
diagnostic programs to those with medical problems associated with kidneys
and urinary tracts. Our physicians and nurses are experts in dealing with
ailments affecting men, women and children.
