Community Health Worker Training and Certification Program

The Harris County Hospital District's Community Outreach Services department is an authorized Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Community Health Worker Training and Certification Program for participants who want to become a certified community health worker or maintain their status through continuing education.

What is a Community Health Worker (CHW)?
A Community Health Worker is a healthcare leader.

They provide needed services such as:

  • Culturally appropriate health education

  • Overcoming barriers, such as language

  • Navigating healthcare systems

  • Speaking up effectively about problems, such as medical bills

  • Seeking available assistance resources

The free 160-hour program prepares participants to become certified with skills to work in a variety of community settings. There is also the option to become certified based on previous work or volunteer experience. To learn more about CHW certification, visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website: www.dshs.state.tx.us/chpr/chw.

Certified community health workers must complete 20 hours of continuing education acceptable to DSHS during each two-year renewal period. A maximum of 10 hours may come from training programs not certified by DSHS. As a DSHS-certified training program, we provide certified continuing education classes; see below for a listing of our upcoming classes.

To register, call Community Outreach Service at 713-634-1242 or e-mail CHW@hchd.tmc.edu
