Department of Pharmacy
Inpatient Pharmacy
Clinical pharmacists work collaboratively with
physicians, nurses and other health-care providers
to ensure excellence in
pharmaceutical care. Clinical pharmacy services are coordinated through
decentralized order entry and other clinical responsibilities, to
include:
-
Drug therapy
monitoring/management based on patient acuity
-
Dosage adjustment based
on lab values
-
Medication consultations
-
Drug information
-
Clinical interventions
-
Adverse drug event
reporting
-
Code blue involvement
-
Compounding sterile
products
-
Drug distribution
Automation
The clinical pharmacists
use novel electronic order imaging systems that allow them to view,
prioritize, and organize medication orders. Medication distribution is
decentralized through the use of automated dispensing cabinets, thereby
increasing pharmacists' time to interact with health-care providers
and focus on patient care. Automation plans for ADE / Intervention data
collection tools, order imaging software, and wireless communication
within the near future will further enhance the availability of clinical
services for inpatient pharmacy personnel. Physician order entry and
bed-side, bar-code scanning plans are currently under development and are
anticipated to make an equally profound impact on pharmacy services.
