Preparing for
Outpatient Surgery There are a
few things you need to do to prepare for your outpatient surgery. As with
any hospitalization, you'll need someone to help you get home after your
surgery. Make arrangements with a friend or relative to drive you home
after your recovery. They may also accompany you to the pre-op area and
visit with you in post-recovery before your dismissal. You will not be
allowed to drive yourself home or take the bus or taxi home by yourself.
Here are some important items to help you prepare:
- Eat a light supper the day before
surgery. After midnight you should not eat, drink or take anything by
mouth. This includes gum, candy and water.
- Don't swallow any water when you brush
your teeth right before coming to the hospital if you do, your surgery
may be canceled.
- If you are on any routine medication for
blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, or seizures, it is very
important for you to take your medication as usual with the smallest sip
of water possible, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
- Please bring your current HCHD Gold Card
or proof of insurance with you.
- Select comfortable clothing to wear to
the hospital.
- If you wear glasses, contacts, dentures,
or a hearing aid, bring along a protective case to store them in during
surgery.
- Don't bring jewelry, credit cards, money
or other valuables with you the day of your surgery. The hospital is not
responsible for lost or stolen valuables.
- Remove all makeup and nail polish before
coming to the hospital.
- If you smoke, stop, or at least reduce
your smoking prior to your surgery.
During your clinic visit prior to
surgery, you will be instructed when to arrive and where to go within
the hospital. If you are unable to keep your surgery appointment, for
any reason, please call the desk at the operating room to let them know.
